The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in East Asian literature or a closely related field to start in Fall 2023. Period and area of specialization are open, but we are especially interested in 1) candidates who work on Chinese literature or the Sinosphere with a transnational or global perspective, 2) candidates who work at the intersection of scientific (or pre-scientific) knowledge and the literary or artistic imagination and/or 3) scholars who are able to work across the conventional premodern/modern divide.
The successful candidate should be willing to contribute to any of the following programs: Film and Media Studies, Performing Arts, Comparative Literature, Women and Gender and Sexuality Studies, Religious Studies, Global Studies. Candidates with expertise in digital humanities, medical humanities, and/or book history and print culture are also encouraged to apply.
A Ph.D. in East Asian Literature and Culture or a closely related field at the time of appointment and native or near-native fluency in both English and a major East Asian Language (Chinese, Japanese or Korean) are required. Duties will include teaching assigned courses at the graduate and undergraduate level (normally two per semester), maintaining an active research and publishing program, advising students, and departmental and university service.
