Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a Research Living Allowance, at current value of $35,013AUD per annum 2024 full-time rate (tax- free stipend), indexed plus allowances as per RTP stipend scholarship conditions at: www. monash.edu/graduate-research/future- students/scholarships/scholarship-policy-and-procedures.

The Opportunity

A new PhD scholarship is being offered by the Monash University Korean Studies program supported by the AKS Core Universities Project ‘Monash Korean Studies Beyond Borders: Creating a Global Hub for a New and Diverse Korean Studies.' The successful candidate will join the Korean Studies Programme and the Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub which was established in 2018 to produce groundbreaking research in Korean Studies.

This scholarship will be offered to a suitable candidate to pursue research in Korean Studies. Please contact Dr Lucien Brown for details. Since this award includes no provision for international tuition fee support, this scholarship is made available only for domestic students.

Applications for Korea-related PhD projects include, but are not limited to, pre-modern or modern history, rebellion in Korea, literature, cinema, popular culture and media studies, cultural studies, sociolinguistics and pragmatics, second language acquisition, sociology of media, overseas Koreans, religion, ethnicity and sociology. These areas reflect the research expertise of Monash University Korean Studies staff. It is important that you think clearly about a member of the Monash University Korean Studies staff who will be able to supervise you.

The successful candidate will join a growing and dynamic Korean Studies team with a high research profile and significant teaching experience. At Monash University Korean Studies, we are dedicated to high-level research on Korea and Korea-related areas. We are committed to developing innovative and engaging teaching approaches using the latest technology and fostering an environment in which learning and skills acquisition continues outside the classroom. We aim to provide maximum support to our students and nurture a dynamic environment in which students' interests in Korea and Korean culture can flourish.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record and an excellent command of both English and Korean. The successful applicant must have a strong research proposal that is feasible under the PhD timeframe, and which aligns with the expertise of Monash University Korean Studies staff.

In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritize applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honours or Masters degree in a relevant field with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded.

Applicants should ensure they familiarise themselves with these requirements before deciding whether they should apply.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by December 2024. However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.

Submit an Expression of Interest

EOIs shall comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant's suitability
  • A brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length that fits within the broad project aims and objectives, and demonstrates some understanding of the area of research
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works, conference presentations and relevant work experience
  • A full statement of academic records, degree certificates and official grading system (if available), supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
  • English language proficiency test results (if applicable)
  • Names and contact details of 2 academic referees
  • Copy of your current passport (if available)
