Beyond Boundaries: Bridging Korean Language Education across
Disciplines, Careers, and Communities
In this era of dynamic transformation, Korean language education stands at the
crossroads of academic inquiry, professional purpose, and community engagement. The
2026 AATK conference theme, Beyond Boundaries, calls for innovative and inclusive
practices that transcend disciplinary silos and institutional limits, responding to the
evolving needs of learners, educators, and communities.
This year’s conference invites papers that explore how Korean language education can
be integrated with Korean Studies and other disciplines in the humanities and social
sciences, as well as with real-world applications in professional and vocational domains.
We encourage presentations that highlight how content-driven, purpose-oriented
instruction fosters deeper engagement, critical thinking, and meaningful connections.
We also seek abstracts that address diverse curriculum models, instructional practices,
and materials development—from general and heritage learner programs to Korean for
academic, business, law, medicine, and other professional purposes. Special attention is
given to collaborative models that bridge classroom learning with community partnerships
and institutional support structures.
Recognizing the critical role of educators, the conference welcomes proposals related to
teacher preparation, mentorship, faculty development, and cross-program collaboration.
Presentations that explore how Korean language programs can build sustainable,
inclusive, and community-connected ecosystems are particularly encouraged.
As we look ahead, the 2026 AATK conference aims to serve as a platform for sharing
bold ideas, forging meaningful collaborations, and envisioning the future of Korean
language and culture education—one that is interdisciplinary, purposeful, and rooted in
community.
Topics of Interest
In line with this year’s theme, we welcome a wide range of proposals that address the
following subtopics. These categories are provided as a guide, and proposals on other
relevant topics are equally encouraged:
▪ Curriculum and Content Integration
o Korean for academic, professional, or vocational purposes, including
advanced-level course design
o Curriculum that connects Korean language to Korean Studies and related
disciplines (e.g., literature, media, history)
o Content-based, theme-based, and task-based instructional models
▪ Inclusive Pedagogy and Learner Engagement
o Instruction for heritage learners and learners from diverse backgrounds
o Strategies for fostering identity development, belonging, and active
participation
o Culturally responsive and learner-centered instructional approaches
▪ Collaboration Across Programs, Institutions, and Communities
o Intra-institutional collaboration between language and subject areas
o Cross-institutional or regional curriculum and resource-sharing initiatives
o Partnerships with K–12 schools, local communities, and heritage
organizations
▪ Teacher Development, Resource Sharing, and Institutional Support
o Teacher training, mentoring, and professional development
o Shared instructional materials and collaborative projects among small
programs
o Institutional models that support sustainable program and faculty growth
We invite the submission of proposals and abstracts that discuss various aspects of
research and professional development in the field of Korean language education —
including those that address topics beyond this year’s theme. We encourage abstracts
from K-12 educators as we plan to reserve at least one workshop session for K-12
participants. Additionally, special awards will be given to graduate students who present
excellent conference papers. (Note: These awards will not apply to papers copresented with a faculty member.)

▪ Workshop Session (75 minutes including Discussion):
Practical sessions offering immediately applicable strategies in areas such as
program development, materials and resource creation, instructional techniques,
and assessment. interactive, hands-on engagement with participants is crucial.
Lecture-style presentations are strongly discouraged.
▪ Research-oriented Paper (20-minute presentation followed by 10 mins. Q & A):

include data or analysis and clearly connect to Korean education/program
development.

contexts and may inspire adoption or adaptation by fellow educators.
