The Department of East Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Research Associate and Lecturer in the field of late imperial (Ming-Qing) Chinese literature.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester. Our gateway course EAST 1010 (“East Asian Canons and Cultures”) is taught both in the fall and spring semesters. EAST 1010 is required for all majors and minors in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and East Asian studies and introduces the cultural foundations of East Asian civilizations. The candidate will also teach one introductory course on Modern/Contemporary Chinese literature in English translation (CHTR 3020), either in the fall or spring semester (period is flexible but must include the 20th century; film may be included), and one other course based on their research expertise and interests.

The candidate will also be expected to maintain an active research portfolio, giving at least one lecture in the department or the East Asia Center, and participating in any relevant conferences or workshops taking place at UVA during the academic year. The Institute for Humanities and Global Cultures also has a vibrant lecture series and other events that may be of interest to the candidate.

Qualified candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The salary is set at $50,000. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.

This position will remain open until filled and review of applications will begin on January 31, 2024. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
