Call for Papers: Korea Futures: Society, Sustainability, and Transformation – Centre for Korean Studies, University of Sheffield, UK – 26-27 March 2026: Deadline for applications – 26th November, 2025 The challenges facing contemporary societies, including demographic ageing, technological disruption, environmental crisis, and widening inequality, are deeply interconnected. Across the world, governments and communities are grappling with how to build sustainable and inclusive futures amid accelerating change. South Korea provides a particularly compelling vantage point from which to consider these global transformations. As a highly developed democracy and innovation-driven economy, Korea has undergone one of the most rapid social and cultural transitions of the modern era, from post-war reconstruction and authoritarian rule to digital modernity and global cultural influence. It now faces the complex consequences of that transformation: an ageing population, changing labour markets, housing pressures, environmental vulnerability, and new forms of social activism and political participation. Korea Futures invites presenters to reflect on these intersecting processes of change and continuity, and to consider how Korea’s experiences can illuminate broader questions about sustainability, equity, and global interdependence. 32nd 유럽 한국학회(AKSE) Conference at the University of Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh will host the 32nd biennial Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE) Conference as an in-person event from 19 to 22 June 2025 in Edinburgh, UK. The conference is co-organized by the University of Edinburgh with the AKSE Council. The biennial AKSE conferences provide an opportunity for European scholars of Korean Studies to gather and exchange research. The conferences host the AKSE membership meeting, making this the most important event of the association. AKSE conferences are also a way for European scholars to communicate with the global academic community, and we warmly welcome non‐members and scholars from outside Europe. 2025 SNU International Conference for Contemporary Korean Studies Date: August 22-23, 2025Location: Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea Korea as Symptom: Perspectives on the FutureThe SNU Institute for Contemporary Korean Studies is delighted to announce the 2025 Annual International Conference, to be held at Seoul National University on August 22-23, 2025. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural international conference, this event has now been established as an annual tradition. This year’s theme, Korea as Symptom: Perspectives on the Future, invites an exploration of contemporary Korean society as a dynamic intersection of global forces and historical experiences—including (de)colonization, the Cold War, modernization, globalization, financialization, and digitalization. Far from being isolated phenomena, many of South Korea’s recent developments—such as the crisis of democracy, an extremely low fertility rate, regional depopulation, entrenched competitive environments, the dominance of financial capitalism, rising multiculturalism, innovative cultural practices, and emerging youth cultures—should be understood as ‘symptoms’ of broader global transformations. AKSE Book Prize for Korean Studies in Europe 2024 – Call for Nominations
The Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE) plans to award the AKSE Book Prize for Korean Studies in Europe at the 32nd AKSE conference in Edinburgh. The prize carries a € 2000 cash award. In 2025, the prize will be awarded for Korean Studies publications in any European language including English. We are calling for nominations of scholarly monographs centred on Korea, academic, annotated translations of original Korean sources (contemporary literary translations are not included), edited volumes and university-level textbooks which have been published during the last five years (i.e. since 2020) and are apt to raise interest in the academic study of Korea beyond the confines of Korean Studies proper. Dissertations, exhibition catalogues, poetry, fiction, travel books, memoirs, autobiographies etc. are not eligible. Nominated authors must be Korean Studies scholars affiliated with a European institution (excluding visiting scholars) or independent scholars based in Europe. The nominated authors do not need not be AKSE members. Nominators must be AKSE members and have to hold (or be retired from) an academic position or be otherwise an established member of the academic community. Self-nominations are possible.
