AATK 2025 Conference Theme:

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of AATK: Building a Global Community for a New Era

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK), this milestone conference will provide a meaningful venue for participants to reflect on past accomplishments, examine present challenges, and envision future directions in Korean language education. The 2025 AATK conference invites educators, researchers, and practitioners from around the globe to engage in discussions that not only celebrate the legacy of Korean language education but also shape its future by building a global community of Korean language educators.

 

Over the past three decades, AATK has grown into a vital organization that fosters excellence in Korean language education across the United States and beyond. From its humble beginnings, AATK has expanded its reach by connecting educators and scholars, developing innovative teaching methodologies, and advocating for the advancement of Korean language programs at all educational levels. This 30th anniversary conference not only marks a significant milestone but also serves as a platform to honor our shared accomplishments and to discuss the future trajectory of Korean language education.

The rapid advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), have enabled Korean language educators to collaborate across regional boundaries like never before. This has made the notion of a global community more pertinent than ever. This conference aims to provide opportunities for participants to share insights and strategies on fostering students' global citizenship and advancing a global network of Korean language programs.

 

This year's theme emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive, innovative, and globally connected community of Korean language educators and researchers. We welcome proposals that explore the intersections of language policy, pedagogy, and technological advancements while fostering intercultural competence and global citizenship among learners. The conference seeks to set forward-looking, timely directions for Korean language education that align with the evolving demands of our era.

 

Topics may include but are not limited to the following subjects:

-          Fostering Global Citizenship through Language Learning

-          Global Network of Korean Language Learning and Teaching

-          Intercultural Competence and Communication

 

•    21st Century Skills and Innovation:

-          Multimodal literacy and Digital Literacy

-          Technological and Language Learning in a Global Community

-          Integrating Korean Studies into Korean Pedagogy

-          Career-readiness, Asset-based Approach to Language Learning and Teaching

 

•     Learner-Centered Approaches:

-          Learner Profiles

-          Comparative Approaches to Teaching, Learning, and Practice

-          Translanguaging and Multilingualism

-          Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Critical Pedagogy

 

We invite the submission of proposals and abstracts that discuss various aspects of research and professional development in the field of Korean language education — including those that address topics beyond this year’s theme. Given the significance of the 30th anniversary, we are expanding the number of sessions to accommodate more presentations. In particular, we encourage abstracts from K-12 educators as we plan to reserve at least one workshop session for K-12 participants. Additionally, special awards will be given to graduate students who present excellent conference papers. (Note: These awards will not apply to papers co-presented with a faculty member.)

 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

 

1. Presentation Categories

  (1) Workshop panel (90 minutes):

Workshop panels address practical concerns and share immediately applicable suggestions on issues ranging from development of programs, materials, and resources to instructional activities and techniques to methods of assessment.

  (2) Teaching methods and materials (20-minute presentation followed by Q & A):

This category has been designed for sharing novel and effective practices in teaching Korean.

  (3) Conference paper (20-minute presentation followed by Q & A):

This section of the meeting entails the presentation of research on topics pertaining to teaching and learning of Korean. Also, we expect explicit statements of the relevance of the presented research to Korean program development and pedagogic practices. A mere description of instructional materials or practices without analysis of data, which would better fit the above category of teaching materials exchange, will not be considered for this category.

Abstract Guidelines

• WorkshopAbstracts

-The topic should address current and continuing concerns of the Korean teaching field.

-The purpose and objective of the workshop should be clear, motivated, and plausible.

-The contents should be relevant, substantive, and engaging.

-There should be a viable procedure for audience involvement.

• Teaching Methods and Materials Abstracts

-The topic should address current and continuing concerns of the Korean teaching field.

-The purpose and objective of the presentation should be clear, motivated, and plausible.

-The material should be original and stimulating.

-The effectiveness of the material should be well demonstrated.

• Conference Papers Abstracts

-The research goals should be clearly stated and related to existing studies.

-The research should be based on robust data.

-The methods should be well-defined and the analysis should be solid.

-The results and discussion should be substantive and informative.

-The research should be relevant to Korean teaching.

 

1. Requirements for Proposal or Abstract Submission

• The presenter or ALL co-presenters listed must be an AATK member at the time of submitting a proposal or abstract.
• Adding presenters will NOT be allowed after submission of a proposal or abstract.
• All accepted presenters must pre-register by April 15th, 2024. Please check that the membership of AATK of the presenter(s) is valid or renewed before the conference. Otherwise, presenter names will NOT appear in the program.
• All session chairs must register for the workshop and conference and be a member of the AATK.
• All presentations must involve original materials, which have never been presented or published elsewhere.

 

1. Length: Maximum 500 words (English or Korean) + References or data limited to 250 words if applicable.

 

1. Limit of Submission: No more than 1 individual and 1 joint proposal/abstract, or 2 joint abstracts/proposals per person.

 

1. Limit of co-presenters: No more than 5 individuals can be listed as co-presenters on a proposal/abstract.

북미한국어교육학회 2025 학술대회 주제:

북미 한국어 교육학회 30주년 기념: 미래를 위한 한국어 교육의 글로벌 커뮤니티 구축

북미한국어교육학회(AATK)의 30주년을 기념하면서, 이번 학회는 한국어 교육의 성과를 되돌아보고, 현재 직면한 도전 과제를 탐구하며, 한국어 교육의 미래 방향을 구상하고자 합니다. 2025년 AATK 학회는 전 세계의 한국어 교육자, 연구자, 그리고 실무자들을 초청하여 한국어 교육의 역사적 성취를 돌아보고, 글로벌 커뮤니티를 더욱 공고히 함으로써 한국어 교육의 미래를 함께 설계하는 소통의 장을 마련하고자 합니다.

 

지난 30년 동안 AATK는 미국 내외에서 한국어 교육의 우수성을 증진시키는 중요한 기관으로 성장했습니다. 초기의 소박한 시작에서부터 AATK는 교육자와 학자를 연결하고 혁신적인 교수법을 개발하며, 모든 교육 단위에서 한국어 프로그램의 발전을 지원하면서 그 활동범위를 확장해 왔습니다. 이번 30주년 학술대회는 중요한 이정표일 뿐만 아니라 우리의 공동 성과를 기리고 한국어 교육의 미래 방향을 논의하는 플랫폼으로서의 역할을 할 것입니다.

 

인공지능(AI) 등 첨단 기술의 급속한 발전은 한국어 교육자들이 지역적 경계를 넘어 서로 협력할 수 있게 했으며, 이로 인해 글로벌 커뮤니티의 개념은 그 어느 때보다 중요해졌습니다. 이번 학회는 참가자들이 학생들의 글로벌 시민 의식을 함양하고 한국어 교육 프로그램의 글로벌 네트워크를 발전시키는 통찰력과 전략을 공유할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 합니다.

 

이번 학회는 시대적 요구에 부응하여 한국어 교육의 미래 지향적이고 시의적절한 방향을 제시하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 올해의 주제는 포용적이고 혁신적이며 글로벌하게 연결된 한국어 교육자 커뮤니티의 중요성을 강조하고 있습니다. 따라서 언어 정책, 교수법, 기술 발전의 교차점에서 다문화 역량과 글로벌 시민 의식을 육성하는 주제에 대한 발표를 환영합니다. 발표 주제는 다음과 같은 주제를 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 국한되지 않습니다:

초록 제출 지침

1. 학회 발표 유형

  (1) 워크샵 (90 분): 프로그램, 수업 자료, 학습 활동, 평가 방법 개발 등과 관련된 보다 실질적인 내용을 중심으로 하는 워크샵. 적극적인 청중의 참여 유도 필수.

  (2) 교수 방법 및 자료 (20 분 발표 이후 질문 응답 시간 10분): 새롭고 효과적인 교수 방법 및 자료를 공유하는 발표.

  (3) 연구 논문 (20 분 발표 이후 질문 응답 시간 10분): 한국어 학습과 교육 관련 학술적 연구 발표. 연구 동기, 데이터 수집, 연구 분석 및 결과에 대한 토론 포함 필수.

1. 초록 제출 시 유의 사항

• 초록 제출은 북미한국어교육학회 회원이어야만 가능함. 즉 모든 발표자/저자들이 초록 제출 시 회원이어야 함.
• 초록 제출 이후 발표자/저자 추가 불가함.
• 초록 심사 결과 발표 이후 모든 발표자/저자는2024 년 4 월 15 일까지 연례 학회 선등록 필수. 학회 등록 시 그리고 발표 시 AATK 회원 상태 계속 유지 되어야 함.
• 회원가입과 선등록이 마감 날짜까지 이루어지지 않을 경우 학회 프로그램에서 발표자/저자 이름 제외. 세션 담당자들도 북미한국어교육학회 회원이어야 하며 연례 학회 등록 필수.
• 모든 발표는 독창적인 연구여야 하며 타 학회에서 발표했거나 학술지 등에 이미 게재된 논문은 제외.

 

1. 길이:영어 또는 한국어로 최대 500 어절 + 참고문헌 250 어절
