Call for Papers: Korea Futures: Society, Sustainability, and Transformation – Centre for Korean Studies, University of Sheffield, UK – 26-27 March 2026: Deadline for applications – 26th November, 2025 The challenges facing contemporary societies, including demographic ageing, technological disruption, environmental crisis, and widening inequality, are deeply interconnected. Across the world, governments and communities are grappling with how to build sustainable and inclusive futures amid accelerating change. South Korea provides a particularly compelling vantage point from which to consider these global transformations. As a highly developed democracy and innovation-driven economy, Korea has undergone one of the most rapid social and cultural transitions of the modern era, from post-war reconstruction and authoritarian rule to digital modernity and global cultural influence. It now faces the complex consequences of that transformation: an ageing population, changing labour markets, housing pressures, environmental vulnerability, and new forms of social activism and political participation. Korea Futures invites presenters to reflect on these intersecting processes of change and continuity, and to consider how Korea’s experiences can illuminate broader questions about sustainability, equity, and global interdependence. The conference aims to foster dialogue across disciplines to imagine Korea’s multiple futures in a connected world. Possible themes include: Climate change, sustainability, and…

2025 SNU International Conference for Contemporary Korean Studies Date: August 22-23, 2025Location: Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea Korea as Symptom: Perspectives on the FutureThe SNU Institute for Contemporary Korean Studies is delighted to announce the 2025 Annual International Conference, to be held at Seoul National University on August 22-23, 2025. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural international conference, this event has now been established as an annual tradition. This year’s theme, Korea as Symptom: Perspectives on the Future, invites an exploration of contemporary Korean society as a dynamic intersection of global forces and historical experiences—including (de)colonization, the Cold War, modernization, globalization, financialization, and digitalization. Far from being isolated phenomena, many of South Korea’s recent developments—such as the crisis of democracy, an extremely low fertility rate, regional depopulation, entrenched competitive environments, the dominance of financial capitalism, rising multiculturalism, innovative cultural practices, and emerging youth cultures—should be understood as ‘symptoms’ of broader global transformations. This conference aims to examine these phenomena as entry points to imagine the future of Korean and global societies. What do these symptoms reveal about larger structural and historical processes? Do they simply signal crises within current systems or do they offer pathways toward alternative…

“Religious Mosaic: New Perspectives on Faith and Tradition in Contemporary Korea” 9th-10th May 2025, University of Turin, Italy Deadline for submission of abstracts: 5th December 2024 Notification of acceptance: 22nd December 2024 The Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Modern Cultures at the University of Turininvites applicants for the Second International Conference of “Making Korea a Religiously PluralSociety? Historical, Legal, and Social Approaches” Project (2023-2025) to be held at the Universityof Turin from 9th to 10th May 2025. In the context of the study of religious pluralism in contemporary societies, the case of South Korea, which presents the coexistence of different religious traditions in an advanced and dynamic society, continues to attract the attention of religious scholars. Today, Christianity, Buddhism, Confucianism, Shamanism, and many other religions including newreligions continue to influence individuals and Korean society at different levels. However, as SouthKorea becomes increasingly secularized and globally intertwined, Korean religious pluralism is alsoaffected by modern-day challenges. Indeed, the decline of affiliation with traditional confessions found in economically advancedcountries is also present in South Korea, with an increasingly less traditionally religious populationwilling to exercise greater religious mobility and agency in choosing one’s spiritual path. At the sametime, the affirmation of the K-culture in the…
