Position Summary
Indiana University Bloomington’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies seeks a full-time tenure-track assistant professor of modern and contemporary Korean Literature and Cultural Studies, broadly defined, to begin August 1, 2023. The position is 100% in HLS’s renowned multidisciplinary Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC).

Candidates must have a doctoral degree or clear indication that the degree will be in hand by July 31, 2023. Teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities encompass both undergraduate and graduate courses, and will include “Korean Popular Culture” and “Modern Korean Literature,” among others.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree or clear indication that the degree will be in hand by July 31, 2023.

The successful candidate should have an active research record with clear potential for scholarly excellence, be able to work across arts and humanities disciplines, and have expertise in one or more of the following areas: modern Korean literature, film, popular culture, and media studies. The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in Korean Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor. Anticipated start date is August 2023.

Disciplinary specialization may include Korean film, animation, popular culture, literature, and media studies. In addition to expanding our range of course offerings in Korean, the candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues in both the East Asian section and SILC more generally, to design courses with transnational and comparative topics. Expertise in a second East Asian language or film tradition is strongly desired, as is evidence of ability to design undergraduate- and graduate- level courses on transnational East Asian and interdisciplinary comparative topics that put Korean studies in dialogue with broader regional and global currents in film, media, and visual studies.

The candidate will be expected to contribute both content and upper-level language courses, depending on program needs. The Korean program features Korean Studies Certificate and Korean Minor. We seek a candidate who can play a key role in the development of the Korean section, and who is committed to inclusion and excellence in research and education.

Essential Functions of the Position

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Design and teach two courses per semester in Korean film, popular culture, literature, and/or visual media studies at both undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Contribute to curriculum development in the Korean section and SILC more broadly.
  • Supervise honors, masters, and doctoral students.
  • Conduct research and publish in top-tier journals and presses.
  • Participate in professional and university service as appropriate for rank.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a Korean-related humanities field required by time of appointment. ABD candidates may be considered, but must have Ph.D. conferred by time of appointment.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in both modern Korean and English.
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the university level.
  • Evidence of clear research agenda and scholarly publication trajectory.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Research and teaching expertise in interdisciplinary, transnational East Asian and comparative topics Research and teaching expertise in a second Asian language and culture Ability to teach content courses in Korean Ability to use basic instructional technology (i.e., Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.

EXPERIENCE:

The Palo Alto Unified School District English Learner Program is currently looking for adult tutors to support High School aged students in languages other than English. Potential candidates must care about and enjoy children. The Palo Alto Unified School District English Learner program seeks fluent speakers and writers of Korean.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tutors will support beginning English Learners by helping them understand classroom teacher instruction and the core content. Tutors will be utilized to explain information and translate for the child, and the teacher in the classroom and at parent meetings. Tutors are often used to translate written English into the child’s primary language to support parents that prefer to read in languages other than English. Tutors are important resources in the English Learner Program because they provide a means of communication between beginning English speaking students, teachers and parents.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in East Asian literature or a closely related field to start in Fall 2023. Period and area of specialization are open, but we are especially interested in 1) candidates who work on Chinese literature or the Sinosphere with a transnational or global perspective, 2) candidates who work at the intersection of scientific (or pre-scientific) knowledge and the literary or artistic imagination and/or 3) scholars who are able to work across the conventional premodern/modern divide.

The successful candidate should be willing to contribute to any of the following programs: Film and Media Studies, Performing Arts, Comparative Literature, Women and Gender and Sexuality Studies, Religious Studies, Global Studies.  Candidates with expertise in digital humanities, medical humanities, and/or book history and print culture are also encouraged to apply.

A Ph.D. in East Asian Literature and Culture or a closely related field at the time of appointment and native or near-native fluency in both English and a major East Asian Language (Chinese, Japanese or Korean) are required. Duties will include teaching assigned courses at the graduate and undergraduate level (normally two per semester), maintaining an active research and publishing program, advising students, and departmental and university service.

Teaching responsibilities

· Represent Dear Asia to teach group lessons over evening and/or weekends at our centre; private lessons in our centre or within London Zone 1-3; and corporate training lessons during normal office hours
· Prepare well each lesson in your own time is essential
· Obtain relevant teaching material, as well as training and support from our head office academic team
· Report in to head office with timely feedbacks from students or clients
· Help each and every student under your responsibility

Admin responsibilities

· Manage a working calendar with updated availability and lessons bookings
· Prepare your own monthly invoice
· File your own tax return annually

Qualifications and Skills

– Native Korean speaker & fluent in English
– Full rights to work in the UK with a minimum of one year legal stay

Position Summary
Indiana University Bloomington’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies seeks to fill two full-time lecturer positions in Korean language to begin August 1, 2023. The positions are 100% in HLS’s renowned multidisciplinary Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC). Each successful candidate will be appointed with an initial three-year contract, renewable annually, with promotion to senior lecturer and long-term contract in the sixth year for excellent performance.

Duties include a three-course workload per semester and active involvement in training and supervising graduate student teaching assistants, conducting placement tests, and other duties related to program management and development.


Basic Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: MA in Korean language and linguistics, language pedagogy, applied linguistics or related field; native or near-native proficiency in Korean and English; prior experience and demonstrated success in teaching Korean at the college level in the U.S.

Applicants must be qualified to teach Korean language at all levels .
