The Department of History at the University of Chicago invites applications for an Instructional Professor at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full in Korean History. This is a new, full-time, teaching position. The initial term of appointment will be from three to five years, depending on rank and with a start date no later than September 2025, renewable based on a performance review. The salary is competitive and includes benefits.

 

The successful candidate will teach a total of six courses per year. Four of these courses will be in the 3-quarter East Asian Civilizations sequence. The other two will be on Korean History, developed in consultation with the Undergraduate Studies Committee of the History Department and faculty members who work on East Asian history. In addition, the successful candidate will be asked to advise a number of BA theses and independent research projects on Korea-related topics and contribute to Korea-related programming at the Center for East Asian Studies.

 

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees Union (SEIU) and the University.

Qualifications

Candidates much complete all requirements for the PhD degree by the appointment date of September 2025 and have a record of undergraduate teaching experience, with an emphasis on innovative approaches to teaching. We especially welcome applicants who have broad training in Korean and East Asian history, including the premodern and early modern periods.
