Instructor/Lecturer in the Korean Language

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track teaching faculty position in the Korean language, starting August 16, 2024. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of an instructor (Master’s degree or ABD) or lecturer (PhD). The possibility of renewal after the first year, will be contingent upon sufficient course enrollments, successful performance review, and funding availability.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Summary

This position will contribute to the growth and vibrancy of the Korean Language Program through engaging teaching and service activities. Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. The successful candidate will teach three Korean language courses per semester across all levels and assist with new curriculum development and coordinating Korean language placement and proficiency assessments. Service responsibilities may include training graduate teaching assistants and outreach and cultural activities. Teaching faculty of all ranks are expected to engage in regular professional development with the department support.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language education, language pedagogy or a relevant field
  • Native or near-native fluency in Korean
  • Professional competency in spoken and written English
  • A record of demonstrated excellence in teaching (e.g., teaching evaluations)
  • At least one-year of experience teaching Korean at the college or post-secondary level, preferably at a North American institution

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD preferred in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language education, language pedagogy or a relevant field
  • Experience in teaching all levels of Korean
  • Demonstrated proficiency in current teaching methodologies and instructional technologies
  • Demonstrated experiences with ACTFL Proficiency Standards and proficiency-oriented curriculum development
