Revised Draft Job Announcement for Premodern Korean Studies

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Premodern Korean Studies. The position is expected to begin August 2024.

We welcome applications from candidates working in any periods or disciplines of premodern Korea. Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to archeology, art history, history, literature and cultural studies, and religious studies. Priority will be given to candidates who combine a broad knowledge of archival resources with comparative and interregional methodologies that are applicable across linguistic, cultural, and political borders. The successful candidate will complement existing faculty strengths in the department and other related academic units, diversify and enhance our undergraduate and graduate course offerings, and show a strong commitment to inclusive teaching and service.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. Interested candidates should provide: 1) a letter of interest; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) statements of research, teaching, and diversity; 4) a recent writing sample or publication; 5) two sample syllabi; and 6) the names and contact information of three referees who will be contacted through a system-generated email to provide letters.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, and the University of Southern California seek faculty who will foster an inclusive academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and outlooks. Candidates are encouraged to include as part of their cover letters or teaching statements a brief discussion of how their work and experience will further these ideals. They might also demonstrate concrete ways in which they actively engage diverse classroom perspectives in respectful academic discourse, and/or have a track record of service to their academic departments or schools that addresses broader issues in higher education including but not limited to accessibility, representation, or culture.

In order to be considered for this position, all candidates must apply via the “Apply” link at the top or bottom of this page.  The deadline for applications is 5 pm PST December 1, 2023. Inquiries may be sent to Professor Sunyoung Park, sunyounp@usc.edu but application materials must be submitted online.

The annual base salary range for this position is $89,250 – $94,250. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
