Korean Coordinator – Inst/Ast Professor Fixed Term

Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures is seeking one full-time Korean Language Instructor or Assistant Professor (Coordinator) of Korean Language. This is a fixed-term, nine-month, academic year position beginning August 16, 2024 and is renewable contingent upon funding and performance. Rank is determined by highest degree, with a Master’s degree required for an instructor position and a PhD required for an assistant professor position. All degrees must be conferred by the time of hire. Salary is commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will teach six Korean Language courses each academic year in the Korean Program. If the candidate is qualified to serve as the Korean program coordinator, the teaching load would be five courses, with one course release for program administration.   

The successful candidate will contribute to diversity and inclusive excellence through teaching six Korean courses at all levels, each academic year (teaching assignments will be determined by Program needs). Based on the qualifications and Program need, the candidate may also be asked to teach a content course on Korean language and society or Korean culture. The successful candidate will furthermore share service and extracurricular responsibilities with other Korean faculty and participate in curriculum and program development, outreach activities, and language program coordination. If the selected candidate has a PhD degree and is qualified to serve as the Korean program coordinator by satisfying most of the desirable qualifications, the teaching load would be five courses, with one course release for program administration.

Minimum Requirements

  • M.A. or PhD degree in Korean language teaching and learning, linguistics, applied linguistics, foreign language teaching, second language acquisition, Korean language and culture, or related field.
  • Two to three years’ experience teaching Korean language courses to college students in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to teach Korean language courses from beginning to advanced levels.
  • Training in proficiency-oriented/communicative language instruction.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in both Korean and English.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., teaching materials, and quantitative and qualitative data from teaching evaluations).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in online teaching and/or appropriate technologies in language instruction.

Desired Qualifications

  • PhD degree preferred. 
  • At least two years of teaching experience in North America. 
  • Experience with ACTFL proficiency standards and proficiency-oriented/communicative language instruction.
  • Experience in post-secondary coordination in North America at the individual course level or program level.  
  • Ability to teach content courses (in English) such as Korean language and society, Korean culture, literature, or film studies.  
  • OPI certification.
  • A strong record of participation in team work and program events.
  • Active involvement in profession.
  • Note that candidates with experience in Korean program coordination will be considered for the coordinator position.
