Description
The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Korean Language and Linguistics, beginning in Fall 2023. Applicants should have expertise in acquisition of Korean language as an additional language, Korean linguistics, second language phonetics/phonology, and intercultural communicative language teaching. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Korean Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a relevant field, and must have proven excellence in teaching and native or near-native fluency in Korean and English. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The selected candidate will be expected to actively engage in research activities that complement the department’s existing research strengths, such as intercultural communication, multilingualism and globalization, language acquisition, and translation studies, and to contribute to cross-linguistic and interdisciplinary research and instruction. The candidate will maintain a 2/2 teaching load, with courses in Korean language, Korean linguistics, and language acquisition at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional duties will include advising undergraduate students enrolled in Asian language teacher certification programs and undergraduate and graduate students focusing on Korean language and linguistics, as well as taking an active role in the department’s master’s programs.
Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in research and teaching, demonstrated ability to initiate and lead research projects and secure external research grants, experience in Korean language curriculum development and upper-division Korean language/heritage language teaching, and experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Linguistics, Korean Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a relevant field.
- Research in the areas of acquisition of Korean as an additional language, second language acquisition with a focus on second language phonetics and phonology, and intercultural communication from the perspective of language learning and teaching.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence for the success of our undergraduate and graduate programs.
- Native or near-native competence in Korean and English for research and teaching in this area.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in initiating and leading research projects, including securing external research funding.
- Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research in the area of Korean linguistics, second language phonetics/phonology, bilingualism, and/or intercultural communication.
- Experience in Korean language curriculum development and upper-division Korean/heritage Korean language teaching.
- Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and commitment to promoting a collegial research and teaching environment that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration.
