Job Description:

The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies in the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in the Korean language. The position is for up to three years and may be renewed.

Requirements:

The department provides students with a well-rounded education in Asian and Asian American Studies by focusing on the study of the languages, linguistics, literatures, histories, and cultures of China, Japan, and Korea at both the graduate (M.A.) and undergraduate (B.A.) level. Applicants should have an M.A. or Ph.D. (or ABD) in language pedagogy, second language acquisition, linguistics, or related fields, and possess native or near-native fluency in both their language of instruction and English. Evidence of dynamic and effective/collaborative language teaching is essential. Candidates with ACTFL OPI Testing Certification and/or Computer Assisted Language Learning ability are desirable.

Job Description:

Principal Responsibilities and Duties
  • Prepare and teach courses in the field of Korean to a diverse student population based on the department’s approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of community college students and the standards of the discipline.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.

Leadership & Management

  • Take overall responsibility for the quality and ongoing development of provision within the department, including teaching and learning, curriculum documentation, extracurricular enrichment, and support for university applications.
  • Lead by example at all levels, including heading up the delivery of academic extension sessions to prepare students for university applications related to the subject area.
  • Produce an annual Department Development Plan, in line with whole-school priorities as well as those specific to the subject area, and review progress against it on a regular basis.
  • Lead the academic monitoring of the department, collaborating with colleagues to ensure that appropriate quality assurance measures are in place as per the Academic Monitoring Handbook.
  • Lead, manage and evaluate all teaching staff within the department, ensuring that they consistently maintain high levels of teaching quality and professionalism (note: in cases where department members have additional responsibilities and are line managed by other colleagues, this is a collaborative process).
  • Liaise with the appropriate member of Senior Team to ensure that the training, development and welfare needs of members of the department are met.
  • Maintain a Department Handbook, which contains departmental policies and procedures regarding curriculum, assessment, marking, feedback, reporting and any other relevant information for teachers in the department.
  • Ensure that members of the department adhere to the Department Handbook and the Academic Staff Handbook, as well as other relevant school policies.
  • Coordinate the drawing up of schemes of work/unit plans in the department, ensuring that there is effective vertical articulation of the curriculum and that it is academically challenging and rigorous.
  • Liaise with colleagues in the Junior School to ensure vertical articulation of academic provision in the subject area.
  • Ensure that all students are taught the concepts, contexts and content outlined in the agreed department schemes of work/unit plans and prepared accordingly for associated internal and external assessments.
  • Ensure that departmental colleagues set appropriate, differentiated teaching and homework tasks, and that high-quality feedback is given in line with the department marking policy.
  • Produce an annual resource order for the department, ensuring that all books, stationery and other resources needed for the following academic year are included.
  • Through management of assigned budgets, ensure that the day-to-day resourcing needs of the department are met.
  • Oversee the curation of a bank of teaching materials and other resources within the department.
  • Liaise with the Head of Libraries and the ICT Director to ensure that appropriate library and electronic resources are in place to support teaching and learning in the department.
  • Ensure colleagues make effective use of available resources to support teaching and learning (including the Library and ICT).
  • Ensure that systems are in place for the quality assurance of all assessment, recording and reporting in the department, including standardisation/moderation of grades awarded and proofreading of written report comments/targets.
  • Encourage and organise extracurricular activities and events associated with the department (e.g. exhibitions, clubs, societies, enrichment weeks) and promote student participation in these, as well as external events and competitions.
  • Bring to the attention of the relevant Assistant Principal (Academic) any difficulties that may arise.
  • Attend regular line management meetings with the relevant Assistant Principal (Academic).

About the Role

The Lecturer in Korean Studies will undertake teaching in their discipline or related areas. They will contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level, and engage in professional activities appropriate to their profession or discipline. The Lecturer of Korean Studies will also undertake administration primarily relating to their activities within the Faculty and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities of, and related administration for, the coordination of an award program of the University.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Subject coordination and delivery, including supervision of tutors
  • Supervision of honours and postgraduate students, as required.
  • Set up and regular maintenance of the relevant subject sites on the Learning Management System (LMS);
  • Development of technology-based teaching, learning and assessment programs and resources
  • Curriculum design and innovation that contributes to strengthening Korean Studies in both language and non-language education

About You

You will possess well-established academic skills and strong academic performance. Your communication and interpersonal skills are vital in this role as you are required to be able to work effectively as part of a team and engage with a variety of stakeholders.

You will also have:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated specialisation in Korean Studies
  • Demonstrated ability for excellence in teaching Korean language and other aspects of Korean society, including course coordination, lecturing, tutoring and the capacity to initiate course development
  • Ability to supervise honours and postgraduate theses

Description

The Department of History of the University of Chicago, with the support of the Center for East Asian Studies and the US Department of Education Title VI Grant, invites applicants for a non-renewable, three-year appointment as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the rank of Instructor in Modern Korean History. We particularly welcome applications from junior scholars whose work situates Korean history in a transregional or transnational perspective and those whose work is thematically or methodologically innovative. The successful applicant will conduct research in their field, teach two undergraduate courses each year on topics chosen in consultation with a faculty mentor, and contribute to the intellectual life of the wider University.  In addition to salary and benefits, the successful applicant will also be provided with research funds to pursue their own research, for conference travel, and for planning conferences or other Korea-related events/programming. 

Qualifications

Candidates must have earned the PhD prior to the start of the appointment.

Applicants are required to apply online at the University of Chicago’s Interfolio site: http://apply.interfolio.com/115326.  Applications should include: (1) a current curriculum vitae (2) a cover letter that describes your research and teaching profile, as well as your plans for the fellowship period(3) a research statement addressing current and future plans for research (2–3 pages); (4) a teaching statement addressing teaching experience and philosophy (1-page); (4) a draft syllabus of at least one course to be taught during the fellowship period; (5) Writing sample from the candidates’ research of approximately 30 pages; (6) three letters of recommendation.

Review of applicants will begin on November 15th, and applications will be reviewed until the position is filled or the search is ended.

유엔인권정책센터 2022 월드프렌즈코리아 KOICA-NGO봉사단 모집

유엔인권정책센터(Korea Center For United Nations Human Rights Policy, KOCUN)는 모든 사람은 태어날 때부터 자유롭고 존엄성과 권리에 있어서 평등하다는 세계인권선언의 가치를 따라 2005년에 설립된 사단법인으로유엔경제사회이사회(UN ECOSOC) 특별협의지위를 획득한 비영리 민간단체입니다.

코쿤은 유엔활동 및 연구학술 활동뿐만 아니라꾸준히 현장사업도 진행하고 있습니다. 2007년부터 KOICA 지원으로 시작하여 2009년부터는 여성가족부와 함께 결혼이민예정자의 안전한 이주와 국내 초기 정착을 지원하는 결혼이민예정자를 위한 현지사전교육(Pre-departure Orientation,PDO)’을 제공하고 있습니다베트남의 껀터하노이 및 하이퐁필리핀의 마닐라와 세부몽골캄보디아태국 등 각지에서 수행하였고 현재는 베트남필리핀태국총 3국의 4개 사업장에서 교육을 진행하고 있습니다.

2011년부터는 귀환결혼이민자 및 특히 한베자녀의 안정적인 본국 재정착 지원을 목적으로 베트남 최초의 한국베트남 다문화가정 통합돌봄센터(한베함께돌봄센터)를 설립하여 통합적 돌봄시스템을 제공하고 있습니다.
