(MLS) is a woman-owned small business that provides full-spectrum linguistic, analytical, and training support to the U.S. Military and Intelligence Community, federal civilian agencies, and commercial organizations. With services in over 100 languages and resources in more than 60 countries, MLS specializes in mobilizing the linguistic, technical, and management personnel needed to meet mission critical communications and operational objectives.

We are actively seeking qualified Korean linguists to support a DoD customer in the National Capital Region (NCR). Linguists are responsible for creating summaries, gists, and full translations. This position will be temporarily remote until the customer’s security process is completed.

Requirements

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct and prepare accurate written gists, translations, and/or transcriptions of general and technical material consisting of hand-written, audio, and/or video language material and documents in hard copy and electronic formats, using correct syntax and expression from the specific foreign language and in English, in a manner that maintains the integrity and meaning of the material
  • Quickly scan and process a large amount of material in a foreign language for critical and essential elements of information as defined by the customer’s standard operating procedure (SOP)
  • Provide input to media exploitation team members in the production of written reports developed from target material utilizing the specific foreign language, such as providing a gist (summarization of key points), summary, transcription or written translation of the material
  • Leverage technical automated information system skills, such as word processing and data entry, to be used in conjunction with written translations, use advanced language software programs, and participate in forensic processing

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS and/or equivalent formal military training or 5+ years of related work experience
  • Achieve a minimum score of an Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) (3) in the foreign language and a minimum of general professional proficiency (3) for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing in English, with preference given to general professional proficiency plus (3+) or higher
  • Military intelligence and/or equivalent experience
  • Ability to quickly scan and process a large amount of material in a foreign language for critical and essential elements of information
  • Ability to conduct and prepare accurate gists, translations, and/or transcriptions of general and technical materials
  • Ability to write and speak in a clear, concise, and professional manner in the specified foreign language and English
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, address tasks timely and efficiently, and collaborate on group projects
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office programs, and able to learn customer or job-specific software programs and SOPs
  • Willingness to work periodic shift work to meet mission demands

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Center for Language Acquisition at The Pennsylvania State University is currently recruiting a part-time Research Associate to contribute to research in second language acquisition. This opening will involve designing, carrying out, and analyzing experiments about second language learning, especially of Russian and other less commonly taught languages (e.g., Korean).

Job Duties

  • Contribute to the development, design, and execution of research projects in second language acquisition, including of Russian, under general direction of Dr. Kevin McManus.
  • Recruit and schedule participants for experiments.
  • Initiate or contribute to data analysis for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, or oral/written presentations.
  • Draft protocols, abstracts, and consent forms connected with research projects.
  • Train users and other employees in equipment operation, research techniques, data recording functions.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in one of the following disciplines: (applied) linguistics, second language studies, (cognitive) psychology, education, Russian (or related) – MA (or equivalent) in one or more of: (applied) linguistics, second language studies, (cognitive) psychology, education, Russian (or related).
  • Expertise in Russian.
  • Knowledge of a range of research methods (including transcription, testing and measurement in second language acquisition research), research designs (including experimental designs), and quantitative data analysis (e.g., R) and software (e.g., EPrime, FindingFive, or similar data collection platforms).
  • Experience carrying out both independent and collaborative research and writing for publication.
  • Experience working with and/or conducting research with second language learners.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, using a range of media and networks for dissemination
  • In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

Salary: $20-25 per hour, depending on experience, up to 20 hours per week for 12 months

Department Summary
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers programs and courses related to the languages, literatures, and cultures of China, Japan, and Korea. The department has majors and minors in Japanese and Chinese and a minor in Korean. We also offer graduate programs across all three regions.

Position Summary
The Pro Tem Instructor of Korean will teach Korean language courses at a variety of levels and will take on other responsibilities associated with these courses such as developing teaching materials, supervising Graduate Employees, and meeting and communicating with students. The Pro Tem Instructor of Korean may also be asked to serve on department committees.

Minimum Requirements
• M.A. degree in Korean language pedagogy, linguistics, or a related field
• Experience teaching Korean at the university level

Professional Competencies
• Knowledge of foreign language teaching methodologies
• Knowledge of teaching materials development
• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds
• Ability to teach effectively both independently and in a team environment at a variety of levels (beginning to advanced)
