POSITION DESCRIPTION

AIS is looking for instructors to join our Afterschool Heritage Language program in the following languages: Greek, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Swahili. The teacher will lead a class in that is composed of beginners and mixed ages (5 to 10 years old). The class group is small (3 to 8 students). Students have a cultural connection to the language but may not have language competency at the start of the course.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide opportunities for use of oral language skills.
  • Develop cultural connections (literary, musical, customary, etc.).
  • Engage students’ families in the program to establish a bridge between school and home identity.
  • Use and develop student reading and writing skills in context.
  • Engage students through STEAM-based (science, art, etc.) problem-solving activities once students have reached a level when they have developed basic communication skills.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Native speaker of Greek, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Swahili (please specify which language in your application).
  • Experience working with elementary school aged children.
  • Background in teaching or language acquisition desirable.
  • Passionate about connecting language with culture.
  • Must be flexible, engaging, open-minded and comfortable leading an active group of students in an inquiry-based environment.
  • The school will provide curriculum guidelines with the expectation that tutors will contribute to the development of the curriculum specific to language components.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • 3-4 weekly afternoon hours from 3:00-4:45 PM.
  • Paid team meetings as needed.
  • $50 per hour.
  • Technologically savvy with Zoom.
  • Commitment signed each semester.

Global Dimensions is currently seeking qualified Korean language instructors with experience in both in-person and virtual language curriculum instruction teaching adults.

This position is on a part-time on call basis, during regular business hours for language classes from a few weeks to several months in duration. Qualified instructors must teach be located in the following locations: Linthicum/Ft. Meade, MD, Anchorage, AK, San Angelo, TX, Augusta, GA, or Ft. Shafter, HI. This is NOT a remote position.

Qualified candidates must have the following:

  • Korean instructor must have a minimum ILR level 4 in reading, listening

and speaking in Korean and a minimum ILR level 2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English

  • OR the instructor shall have a ILR level 4 in American English and a minimum ILR level 3 in reading and listening in Korean.
  • Instructors shall be familiar with the purpose of classroom assessments, characteristics of good classroom tests (validity, reliability, and practicality) and their significance in test design, and the appropriate uses of different test item types.
  • Must have 5 years’ experience delivering listening and reading comprehension exercises/activities using authentic audio files and graphic texts.
  • Must have 5 years’ experience employing teaching strategies for decoding spoken and written texts.
  • Must have a B.S./B.A. degree from any accredited college or university. **In lieu of the Bachelor’s Degree, an additional four (4) years of directly related experience teaching language to adults may be substituted.
  • Must have 5 years’ experience delivering on-line language learning via an LMS such as Blackboard, both completely online and in blended (online/ in-person) offerings.
  • Must have 5 years’ experience with the three types of Content-Based Instruction (CBI): themed, shelter and adjunct; be able to determine which CBI model works best for intermediate and advanced language learning courses; and have experience developing materials and courses which support these types of instruction.
  • Be familiar with project-based learning and project creation (the former is a learning experience that encourages critical thinking while the latter does not necessarily enable the students to develop or apply their analytical skills)
  • Experience delivering project-based language learning courses.
  • Be located in the following locations: Linthicum/Ft. Meade, MD, Anchorage, AK, San Angelo, TX, Augusta, GA, or Ft. Shafter, HI. *Not a telework/at-home position.

About the Department:

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages (https://mcl.gmu.edu/about-the-department) is at the center of the multilingual and global community that distinguishes George Mason University. The Department offers a major and minor in many languages, including Korean. The Korean Studies Program (https://mcl.gmu.edu/about-the-department/korean) proliferates in its academic scope and students’ learning by engaging in transnational collaboration with Mason Korea (https://masonkorea.gmu.edu), other units of the university, and local Korean American communities. 
 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to actively engage in research in Korean Studies focusing on visual culture and film studies, teach and mentor undergraduate students, and participate in services at the department level and beyond. Candidates may work in various areas, including but not limited to film, television, visual art/culture, animation, digital media, video games, and webtoon. Their research is expected to further our department’s commitment to developing Korean Studies curricula by introducing approaches incorporating Korean language and literature with film art, media studies, and visual culture.
 

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Korean Studies, film and media studies, or related disciplines by the beginning of the appointment. Candidates also must demonstrate native or near-native fluency in Korean to develop and teach upper-division and advanced language and culture core courses in Korean within the Korean Studies curriculum. Qualified candidates will be those possessing an emerging record of high-quality research that demonstrates the potential for excellence and those who can demonstrate strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at the undergraduate level.
 

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with teaching experiences who can teach students for upper-division language and culture core courses of the Korean Studies curriculum are preferred. Demonstrative effective teaching is particularly desirable. We are interested in candidates who have advising experiences for undergraduate students. We are also particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to a collegiate environment that fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Essential Functions of Position

Provide quality instructions, create and maintain an environment which emphasizes
teaching and learning and encourages free discussion of ideas, interests and issues.
Primary duties of part-time faculty members are related to curriculum and teaching; the
assignment is divided between lecture and lab classes as determined by the
department. Part-time instructional faculty are required to be available to students
outside of class.

Part-time Instructor Salary Rate

The starting credit part-time rate from salary table 11 is $84.09 per hour-Lecture and$67.28 per hour-Lab. If you have a doctorate, the rate is $88.15 per hour-Lecture and $70.52 per hour-Lab.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.

Master’s in the language being taught
OR
Bachelor’s in the language being taught
AND
Master’s in another language or linguistics
OR
The equivalent
A combination of education and other accomplishments that are equivalent to the
above. (If claiming equivalency, attach a separate statement which presents the
basis for this claim and submit supporting evidence, e.g. transcripts, publications,

Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above.  Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.

Description

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the language areas of Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese. A strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research is required. Ideal candidate will have teaching experience at the university level. Native or near-native fluency in one of these languages and English is expected; intermediate proficiency in a second language of these three is desirable. 

The successful candidate will have research expertise in one or more of the three language areas, complementing the current faculty of the department including in literature, cultural studies, diaspora studies, film studies, ethnographic studies, and linguistics. We welcome candidates interested in contributing to our interdisciplinary World Cultures and Literatures undergraduate and graduate programs. The candidate will teach language courses at all proficiency levels, and culture courses in the target or English language. The candidate is expected to assist the department chair in developing a Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese program and will have the opportunity to oversee Asian language programs in the future. With over 40,000 students on the University of Houston campus and one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse public universities in the nation, UH (www.uh.edu) is a Carnegie-Designated Tier One Public Research University.

The Department of Asian Languages & Literature at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor in Korean. The University of Washington has a vibrant and growing Korean language program, including a Korean major and minor. Teaching professors engage in teaching, service, and, optionally, research. They are voting members of the faculty and have a career path that includes the ranks of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. This position is non-tenure-track and has a 9-month (Mid-September through mid-June) service period, with the possibility of teaching in the summer for additional compensation.

Qualifications

Applicants must have at least an M.A. degree or foreign equivalent in Korean, Foreign Language Teaching, or another relevant area, and must have native or near-native proficiency in Korean, be fluent in English, and have at least one year of experience teaching at the college or university level.
