JOB SUMMARY:

Ramapo College of New Jersey seeks a pool of applicants for an Adjunct Professor position in Korean beginning the Fall semester of 2023 and continuing in the future. Applicants should hold a Masters degree in Korean or in a related field with equivalent experience in the Korean language, and be able to teach Korean at the introductory level initially and possibly later in the intermediate and advanced levels. Preference will be given to those that have demonstrated experience teaching at the college or university level. Candidates should have knowledge of current teaching methods and online educational delivery tools, or a willingness to learn and implement them. We seek an educator whose passion for teaching Korean will encourage students to continue more advanced study and/or study abroad.

Teach courses in the traditional undergraduate academic areas of Korean language 

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and online educational delivery tools, or a willingness to learn and implement them is required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution, Ph.D. degree preferred.
  • Native or near-native ability in Korean
  • Experience and competence teaching Korean language/culture

Description

The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Korean Language and Linguistics, beginning in Fall 2023. Applicants should have expertise in acquisition of Korean language as an additional language, Korean linguistics, second language phonetics/phonology, and intercultural communicative language teaching. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Korean Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a relevant field, and must have proven excellence in teaching and native or near-native fluency in Korean and English. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The selected candidate will be expected to actively engage in research activities that complement the department’s existing research strengths, such as intercultural communication, multilingualism and globalization, language acquisition, and translation studies, and to contribute to cross-linguistic and interdisciplinary research and instruction. The candidate will maintain a 2/2 teaching load, with courses in Korean language, Korean linguistics, and language acquisition at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional duties will include advising undergraduate students enrolled in Asian language teacher certification programs and undergraduate and graduate students focusing on Korean language and linguistics, as well as taking an active role in the department’s master’s programs.

Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in research and teaching, demonstrated ability to initiate and lead research projects and secure external research grants, experience in Korean language curriculum development and upper-division Korean language/heritage language teaching, and experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in Linguistics, Korean Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a relevant field.
  2. Research in the areas of acquisition of Korean as an additional language, second language acquisition with a focus on second language phonetics and phonology, and intercultural communication from the perspective of language learning and teaching.
  3. Demonstrated teaching excellence for the success of our undergraduate and graduate programs.
  4. Native or near-native competence in Korean and English for research and teaching in this area.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  1. Experience in initiating and leading research projects, including securing external research funding.
  2. Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research in the area of Korean linguistics, second language phonetics/phonology, bilingualism, and/or intercultural communication.
  3. Experience in Korean language curriculum development and upper-division Korean/heritage Korean language teaching.
  4. Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and commitment to promoting a collegial research and teaching environment that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration.

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Temporary SLI Korean Tutor on the Dahlonega campus. The Summer Language Institute (SLI) is an intensive, residential language program. The SLI covers the content of two semesters (1001 + 1002) of language learning in a 7-week period. Tutors are an integral part of the program; they work under the supervision of SLI faculty and in collaboration with the resident tutors to provide assistance to SLI students.
Tutors may be responsible for activities such as taking attendance, monitoring language lab sessions, assisting students in language assignments such as conversation drills, homework, test preparation, leading discussions, etc.  Tutors are expected to attend extracurricular activities and assist the instructor in the preparation and logistics of such activities. Tutors are expected to work 7 days/week, including weekends and holidays, during the program. They cannot commit to taking summer courses during the second half of the summer semester and/or maintain a second job. Tutors report June 8, 2023 for Orientation. Program dates: June 10 – July 28, 2023.

Responsibilities

  • Take attendance, monitor lab sessions, meal times, and other scheduled activities specified in the tutor schedule.
  • Engage the students in conversing in the target language. Be firm, strict, and encouraging when working with the students on their oral assignments. Set a good example for the student participants.
  • Lead discussions, give presentations, and participate in field trips and other activities over the duration of the program.
  • Help students with their homework, projects, preparation for class, tests, exams, etc.
  • Grade homework and quizzes under the instructors supervision.
  • Perform other tasks designated by the instructor.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.
  • College level language courses completed at the 2002-level minimum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in intensive language program preferred.
  • Native or near-native Korean language proficiency preferred.

  • Perform other tasks designated by the instructor.

The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers majors in French, German, and Japanese as well as professional certification in French. The professional certification is useful for careers in travel and tourism, law enforcement, the medical profession, and business. Minors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Latin are also available.
Position Summary
The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures seeks qualified individuals for its Adjunct Instructor pool and welcomes applicants at any time. This posting is for the Fall 2023, Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters. The specific courses involved may vary from semester to semester and openings to teach these courses develop on a periodic basis, depending on department teaching needs.

The anticipated need is to teach undergraduate course(s) for beginning and intermediate in Korean.
