The School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures invites applications for a Part-time Instructor position in Korean language at the elementary, intermediate, or advanced level starting January 2021. The appointment is for one semester, up to two 2- 3- or 4-credit courses, with the possibility of long-term renewal based on performance and funding availability.

The Rutgers Korean language program offers elementary through advanced levels of Korean language for major and non-major undergraduate students. The successful candidate is expected to work with current faculty members and other part-time lecturers to support our goal of achieving excellence in teaching. Salary is commensurate with teaching experience and is based on Rutgers University salary scales.

Position Description
MA in Korean or a related field is required with PhD preferred along with the ability to teach all levels of Korean language. Experience in Korean language teaching is necessary. The successful candidate will teach five courses, including elementary, intermediate, and advanced Korean Language classes and supervise students’ independent work.

Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Organizes colloquia, seminars, and lectures.
  • Hosts international academic conferences and meetings in partnership with other institutions.
  • Coordinates research projects for all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and professional).
  • Hosts cultural events and programs for the campus community and the public.
  • Administers the Bloomington Sejong Institute program for the Bloomington community and surrounding areas.
  • Maintains grant reports, budgets, and other related documents for proper reconciliation.
  • Updates the IKS website, blog, and social media platforms.
  • Leads a team of volunteers.
  • Promotes all aspects of Korean Studies.

General Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including the creation of materials to support these events.
  • Provides staff communications and serves as liaison to program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public; approves staff purchase requests; arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
  • Researches available grants and works closely with managers to identify funding needs and potential sources, creates grant proposals that further advance support of the program and program participants; May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Constructs and administers program budgets and approves spending. Tracks progress on deliverables, analyzes data on projected spending and prepares reports for higher management and funding sources.
  • Keeps abreast of best practices to recommend policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

The Berea College Asian Studies Department announces a full-time, one-year faculty position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Asian Studies, beginning August 2023. The Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Utah invites applications for a full-time, career-line Instructor (Lecturer) in Korean for a one-year term beginning July 1, 2023. Renewal is possible pending performance and funding approval. The teaching load is three courses per semester. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach Korean language courses at all levels, as well as content courses related to culture. The instructor will function as a team member, participating actively in curricular and program affairs and coordinating curriculum with other Korean section faculty.

The candidate must have an MA degree in Korean language instruction, Korean linguistics, Korean Studies, or a related field. PhD preferred. Demonstrated experience in teaching Korean as a second language at the university level and native or near-native fluency in both Korean and English are required. Experience with instructional technologies, up-to-date teaching methodologies, demonstration of active participation in the professional field, and familiarity with the North American educational context are highly desirable. The successful candidate may be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Lecturer) depending on their level of qualifications.

About the Position:

The Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLLI) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a Visiting Lecturer of Korean Language to begin in Fall 2023. This is a one-year, full-time position that contributes to the growing Korean area in MLLI. 

The visiting lecturer will teach Korean language courses at all levels. The teaching load is four courses per semester. Qualified candidates should have a master’s or a doctoral degree in Korean language pedagogy or a related field. Candidates should also have a native or near-native proficiency in Korean and English. Candidates with experience in teaching multiple levels of Korean in a university setting are preferred. Candidates who implement current teaching methods and technology in the field are also preferred. MLLI is particularly interested in candidates with a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence in higher education. 

Applicants should provide: 

(1) a CV including courses taught; 

(2) a cover letter detailing their qualifications for this job; 

(3) a statement explaining their teaching philosophy and methods, including their experience with or commitment to diversity and inclusion in the their teaching and classroom management, as well as their plan to enhance UMBC’s and MLLI’s missions on diversity and inclusion. Summary:

The DPRK Strategic Research Center at KIMEP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, is looking for a motivated and proactive Research Fellow, with native fluency in Korean, to work jointly with the Principal Investigator – Dr. Chan Young Bang – and the staff of the Center, on issues related but not limited to: the North Korean economy, North Korean politics, foreign relations of North Korea, and geopolitical issues on the Korean Peninsula and in East Asia.

The center is seeking an individual passionate about research and interested in deepening their knowledge of economic development in North Korea. This position would suit a researcher interested in:

  • Northeast Asian Geopolitics;
  • International Relations of China;
  • Inter-Korean Affairs;
  • The Economy of the DPRK.

Ideally, the Research Fellow will be versed in translating and adapting analytic and academic writing, opinion pieces and policy papers from English to Korean. The Research Fellow should have a genuine interest in the future of North Korea and the Korean peninsula. If they wish, he/she will have the possibility to teach one course a year and/or semester.

The DPRK Strategic Research Center works collectively under the guidance of Dr. Bang, therefore it is important that the Research Fellow be able to work as part of a team; individual research output is also encouraged, however the emphasis remains on producing solid analysis, thought-provoking opinion pieces and analytical pieces to be published with premium international outlets and academic journals.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Collaborating on advising and preparing publications
  • Preparing opinion pieces for the media
  • Collecting and/or analyzing data
  • Conducting interviews and/or observations
  • Submitting the research output for publication
  • Library/archive searches
  • Transcribing and translating Korean texts into English
  • Promoting the activities of the Center and updating the website
  • Organizing research conferences online and in-person
  • Other research activities as needed

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Korean (native) and English (excellent)
  • Completion of a Master’s Degree, or preferably a PhD in a relevant field (International Relations, Economics, Area Studies, Social Sciences)
  • Considerable experience in a research environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High level of competency with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • At least 1 year of relevant work experience

  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree discipline with a focus on Northeast Asia/DPRK

HSS is looking for applicants who have strong interest in joining the Language and Communication Studies Division and helping our students to learn foreign languages other than English. The appointees are expected to commence work in AY 2023-24. 

Assistant Professor (Teaching)/Lecturer (Teaching-stream)

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in related fields from a renowned university and ideally, at least 3 years of experience in teaching German, Spanish, Korean, or Japanese to students at the tertiary level. Applicants should be able to teach in both English and the language that they specialize in.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. teaching required non-English courses targeting language majors;
  2. teaching elective courses;
  3. assisting in curriculum development and administrative assignments.

Salary & Benefits

Salary will be competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made under the establishment of CUHK, Shenzhen and statutory benefits will be provided according to the prevailing labor laws applicable in the People’s Republic of China.
