PART-TIME KOREAN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR

Foothill-De Anza Community College District is establishing a pool of qualified applicants for this position. Applications will be accepted continuously until otherwise noted.  Applications will remain on file for two years from date received or last submitted.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Applications will be screened by appropriate department representatives on an as-needed basis. Qualified applicants who best meet the needs of the division will be contacted for an interview.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Standard duties expected of all part-time faculty include the performance of instructional, counselor, or librarian duties as assigned; evaluation and assessment of student work; and timely submission of grades. In addition, part-time faculty are expected to participate in the assessment of their performance, including administrative and student evaluations. Part-time faculty may also have opportunities to participate in various campus and staff development activities and are encouraged to be involved in the larger College or District community. Part-time faculty may be eligible to receive additional pay for office hours, additional assignments, and professional development events. 
  • Teach elementary, intermediate, and advanced Korean language courses.

Position Summary
Founded in 2015, Indiana University’s Institute for Korean Studies (IKS) promotes interdisciplinary approaches to the understanding of Korea, on campus and beyond, focusing upon the advancement of cultural fluency by providing programs for students, faculty, and the community. The IKS is housed within the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS). HLS has a dual emphasis that distinguishes it from other schools in the United States, placing equal emphasis on cultural fluency and applied social policy. To influence and change U.S. and transnational businesses, governments, and nonprofits, our students and faculty need to understand the languages, literatures, and ways of life of various parts of the world, in addition to critical issues, such as global governance, security, trade and development, human rights, migration, health, and climate change, that transcend any one nation or region.

The Institute for Korean Studies (IKS) at Indiana University is now accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the 2023-24 academic year. The Fellow should conduct research related to Korea. The Fellow should maintain an active presence on campus, participating in IKS events and interacting with faculty and students.
 
The Fellow will be required to:
· Remain in residence during the period of the Fellowship
· Work on revising their doctoral dissertation for publication as a monograph
· Deliver a public lecture during the appointment period
· Mentor IKS Undergraduate Research Fellows
· Participate in planning and executing Institute for Korean Studies programming

The postdoctoral fellowship will provide a stipend of $55,000 plus benefits as well as conference travel funds up to $2,000. The Fellow will be provided workspace and have full use of the campus and its libraries.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. holders from Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Literature, History, and other associated fields with articulable research foci based within Korean Studies are encouraged to apply.
The applicant who is awarded the fellowship must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. (dissertation deposited) by June 30, 2023.

Position Summary
The Los Rios Community College District is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary part-time faculty teaching assignments. These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitment efforts.

Job Summary
Teach World Language courses at the beginning and/or intermediate college level for the Humanities & Languages Division of Salt Lake Community College.

Languages currently taught include Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Nahuatl, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and Vietnamese. We are especially interested in applications from qualified instructors of Korean with experience teaching novice-level language learners.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
1) Becomes familiar with and follows the current course curriculum outlines, and engages in accepted best pedagogical practices to maximize student learning.
2) Collaborates with the course lead/mentor and other instructors to ensure consistency in course syllabi, pedagogy, assignments, ePortfolio work, testing, grading, and so forth.
3) Supports the College’s mission, vision, and values by incorporating appropriate cultural material representing a broad variety of ethnicities, national origins, socioeconomic groups and other identities, in additional to using inclusive pedagogical practices in the classroom.
4) Prepares and administers student assessments. Provides appropriate and timely feedback.
5) Maintains accurate and complete student attendance records (for Financial Aid and Department purposes), grades, and other classroom documentation as applicable. Grades must be maintained on the College’s learning management system.
6) Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance. Informs students of progress to date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
7) Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
8) Provides ADA accommodations as requested.
9) Completes required department paperwork on time.

Minimum Qualifications
1) M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature or culture), or a related language degree.
2) Native or advanced level of fluency in the target language.

5) Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.
6) ESL instructors should apply to the ESL program, part of the School of Applied Technology and Technical Specialties.
7) At this time language adjuncts are not assigned online classes. Local residency is therefore expected.
Preferred Qualifications
1) M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature or culture), or a related language degree.
2) Native level of fluency in the target language, or a ranking of Advanced-Mid or higher as scored by an official Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Adjuncts hired to teach CLAC or other bridge courses are required to demonstrate proficiency of Advanced High or higher.
3) Two or more years of experience teaching beginning and intermediate language at the college level.
4) Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.
5) Skilled in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems.
6) Knowledge of and experience in computer assisted learning, and in online language instructional methodologies.

It inherits the educational philosophy and academic systems of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) undertakes two important missions for our university’s education. First, HSS offers university-core courses to all undergraduate students in multiple areas, including general education, English language competency, Chinese language competency, physical education and fitness, basic competency in information technology (IT) applications, etc. These areas lay the foundation for the comprehensive education that all CUHK-Shenzhen students receive. Second, HSS also offers its own undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Other Conditions:
Fall 2022/Spring 2023/Summer 2023, part-time, for lecturer applicant pool. Non-tenurial, pending availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. May be for Leeward CC day, evening, or weekend offerings on- and off-campus. This includes the Waianae campus and Early College.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
 

  1. Teach assigned courses in the discipline.
  2. Maintain minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
  3. Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress
  4. Work under supervision of discipline coordinator/division chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
  5. May include instructional assignments involving distance education.

 
Minimum Qualifications
 

  1. Functionally native oral and written fluency in Korean, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following: (a) Master’s in Korean (language or literature); OR (b) Master’s in Korean as a Second Language; OR (c) Master’s in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Korean; OR (d) Master’s in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Korean literature, Korean culture, or any combination thereof.
  2. All minimum qualifications must be from a regionally accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment.  If qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

 
Desirable Qualifications
 

  1. Teaching experience at a community college level. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to work with adult learners and communicate clearly. 
  3. Familiarity with competency-based instruction and behavioral objectives.

UIC now invites candidates for this position which is expected to be filled in February/September 2023: 

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate level (language and culture) and will assist in the development of new subjects as appropriate; managing of students who take Korean language and culture is also a requirement. The incumbent will also undertake all administrative tasks related with the Korean language and culture course.

Job Requirement

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree or higher in Korean language or a closely related field and native or near native proficiency in both Korean and English. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years teaching experience. The appointee should demonstrate a strong sense of commitment, a track record of excellence in teaching, a capacity to design and deliver courses as well as sophisticated communication and presentation skills. Apart from teaching, he/she will be expected to perform administrative duties such as courses coordination and the preparation of official documents in English.

Salary commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience. Fringe benefits include housing allowance, leave and social insurance.  

Appointment Terms

Appointment to this position will initially be made on a fixed-term contract of two years. Continuation of appointment beyond the initial term will be subject to mutual agreement.
