Due to our recent success in winning a Korean Studies Promotion Service Core Grant to establish a Centre for Korean Studies at the University of Sheffield, we are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Korean Studies to join the existing Korean Studies team. Successful candidates will enhance and expand our excellent research by conducting research in their area of expertise, aiming towards publication of peer-reviewed outputs. They will also actively assist with planning and organising the activities of the Centre for Korean Studies. We welcome applications from scholars in any discipline within the broadly defined field of Korean Studies.
The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will conduct research in their area of expertise with a view to submitting work for peer-reviewed publication within two years of commencing the position as part of our commitment to the Korean Studies Promotion Service Core Grant Programme The School of East Asian Studies is bound together by a passionate belief in the importance of East Asia as the most dynamic region in the world. The Department of History and the Program in East Asian Studies (EAS) invite applications for the Florence Levy Kay Postdoctoral Fellowship in Korean or Japanese History, with the rank of Lecturer for 2024-2026. This is a two-year position beginning in Fall 2024. This position responds to student demand in the region, and complements a robust scholarly community. We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarly research in Korean and/or Japanese history address important questions in social and economic history, politics and international relations, environment and climate change, and cultural history. The successful candidate will teach courses in the area of specialization—one each semester, for a total of two courses per year. We expect the candidate to have received the PhD by August 2024 and to demonstrate excellence as a scholar and teacher. The fellowship includes a salary of $62,500 plus benefits, a research fund of $4,000 per year and $1,500 for relocation expenses.

The Opportunity

A new PhD position is being sought in the Monash University Korean Studies programme. The successful candidate will join the Korean Studies Programme and the Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub which was established in 2018 to produce groundbreaking research in Korean Studies. This position is funded with financial support from Monash University Faculty of Arts and the AKS (Academy of Korean Studies) Core University Program for Korean Studies.

The PhD scholarship will be offered to a suitable candidate to pursue research in Korean Studies. Students may be eligible for further support. Please contact Dr Andy Jackson for details.

Applications for Korea-related doctoral projects include, but are not limited to: pre-modern or modern history, rebellion in Korea, literature, cinema and media studies, cultural studies, socio-linguistics and pragmatics, second language acquisition, sociology of media, overseas Koreans, religion, ethnicity and sociology. These areas reflect the research expertise of Monash University Korean Studies staff.

The successful candidate will join a growing and dynamic Korean Studies team with a high-level research profile and significant teaching experience. At Monash University Korean Studies, we are dedicated to high-level research on Korea and Korea-related areas. Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in research and an excellent command of both English and Korean. The successful applicant must have strong research proposal that is feasible under the PhD timeframe, and which aligns with the expertise of Monash University Korean Studies staff.

In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honour’s or Master’s degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded.

Course Description:

LGGA10H3 – Beginner Korean I

Beginner Korean I is an introductory course to the Korean language. Designed for students with no or minimal knowledge of the language, the course will first introduce the Hangeul alphabet (consonants and vowels) and how words are constructed (initial, medial, final sounds). Basic grammar patterns, frequently used vocabulary, and common everyday topics will be covered. Weekly cultural titbits will also be introduced to assist and enrichen the language learning experience. The overall aim of the course is to give students a strong grasp of the basics of the Korean language as well as elements of contemporary Korean culture.

 

Estimated enrolment: 30

 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
Native or near-native fluency in Korean.
M.A. in Korean languages, Linguistics, Teaching a Foreign Language, Second Language Acquisition, or equivalent. ABD (Ph. D.) preferred.
Experience teaching LGGA10H3 or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching Korean language courses at the introductory or intermediate levels.

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement. 

 

 It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.  

All positions involve the completion of all course grading.

 

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

In considering qualified applicants, teaching excellence, currency in and mastery of subject area; previous experience in teaching a similar course at undergraduate (university) level or similar environment; several years related professional experience shall be the criteria used in the selection of the most qualified candidate in accordance with Article 14:12.

 

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.

About the Role This role offers an exciting opportunity for an expert in Korean Language Education. As the Korean Language Teacher Training Program Assistant at the prestigious Asia Institute, you will contribute to the administration and management of the University of Melbourne’s renowned program. Work closely with the Korean Studies team, curate the program, and engage with guest lecturers and students. Make a significant impact in Korean language education and contribute to program success.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Consulting with the Korean Language Teacher Training Program Coordinators within the Asia Institute
  • Assisting with the development and administration of the teacher training program

Who We Are Looking For We are looking for someone with excellent written and oral communication skills in Korean. Additionally, they should possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

You will also have:

  • Experience in managing events, specifically in relation to Korean Studies and Korean Language Teaching
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching Korean language
  • Demonstrated expertise in new media technologies and online teaching
