The Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University in Durham, NC invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in Korean studies to begin July 1, 2024. We are seeking candidates specialized in Korean cultural studies. Candidates with transnational and global perspectives on gender, race, sexuality, and migration are especially welcome to apply. As part of the Department’s multi-search initiative in Japanese, Korean, and South Asian studies, the Department welcomes candidates who will engage with colleagues across languages and cultures covered by the department and the larger Duke community. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Native or near-native fluency in Korean and English is required. Languages and Linguistics at York St John University is looking to build up a bank of part time casual and fixed term academic staff to support delivery of our exciting portfolio of programmes.

The Role

We seek to appoint part-time hourly paid lecturers/tutors to contribute to the delivery of our programmes in English language and linguistics, Korean language, Japanese language, British Sign Language and Deaf studies.  The number of hours worked will be flexible and by negotiation.  The rate of pay includes remuneration for all work done in connection with teaching, preparation, setting and marking of student work, related course administration and includes an allowance for holiday pay.

Applications are invited from applicants who have expertise and experience in teaching any one of the following areas:

  • Introductory grammar
  • Phonetics and/or phonology (either introductory or higher level)
  • Semantics and pragmatics
  • Forensic linguistics
  • Psycholinguistics

The number of hours taught will vary considerably and will depend on both the availability of the individual and the needs of the programmes.

Candidates should hold at least a master’s degree or equivalent (e.g. relevant professional qualifications) in a related subject. Previous experience of teaching at university level would be an advantage.  The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills in English language, be able to demonstrate understanding of student support, be able to motivate students, and be willing work in a team.

The role

We are currently seeking a Lecturer in Korean, or Korean and Linguistics. The successful candidate will join a team of seventeen Languages and Linguistics academics based within the School of Education, Language and Psychology. We offer BA and MA programmes in British Sign Language, Deaf Studies, English Language and Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, Japanese, Korean, and TESOL. 

The successful candidate will contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Korean, TESOL and Linguistics. You will have experience and expertise in teaching Korean to an advanced level to students, preferably including HE level, using a range of teaching and learning techniques.  

During term-time and in assessment periods, the majority of your work will involve teaching in a variety of settings including; small group tutorials/seminars and lectures, assessment, and the provision of pastoral and academic support to students. The successful candidate will also be supported in developing a solid research profile. You are likely to have the opportunity to teach in the areas in which you research and to involve your students in your research through the York St John ‘Students-as-Researchers’ scheme. 

The School of Education, Language and Psychology has recently established a Research Centre for Language and Social Justice. The successful applicant for this post will be encouraged to think about ways in which they (and their students) can contribute towards the development of the Centre. Engaging the public in the study of language(s) will be an important part of the Centre’s work, and ideas about how this might be achieved, both internationally and locally, are welcome.  

Key requirements

It is essential that candidates hold a doctoral-level qualification, or are near completion, and are actively engaged in research. Your area of research expertise may include Korean language and culture, applied linguistics/TESOL. Research interests in language and social justice issues would be an advantage. Candidates with research outputs suitable for submission to REF are encouraged to apply.

The Position

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available. 

Responsibilities

Teach assigned lower division courses in Korean and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • An M.A. degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching.
  • Applicants must have experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse ages, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.
  • A Ph.D. or extensive professional experience is required for teaching upper-division core courses (300- or 400-level).

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2022, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Lecturer A: $4,530-$6,056
Lecturer B: $5,405-$11,994
Lecturer C: $6,190-$13,172
Lecturer D: $7,794-$13,797

-June 16-28, 2024: 1-day orientation on June 16; then Monday-Friday 9:00 am-3:00 pm (plus prep), in person
-July-September 2024: 2 hours/week, evenings, online (plus prep)

Minimum Salary $30/teaching hour (includes prep time) for Cultural Assistant, $32/hour for Language Teacher, $40/hour for Instructional Lead
Job Summary/Basic Function
The mission of Concordia Language Villages is to inspire courageous global citizens through language and cultural immersion. Through a grant from STARTALK, Concordia Language Villages seeks Instructional Leads, Language Teachers & Cultural Assistants in Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Russian.

General Expectations of All Staff:
A. Be familiar with and abide by Concordia Language Villages’ Personnel Policies.
B. Promote the health, safety, and well-being of all staff members and participants.
C. Develop and maintain collegial relationships among all staff, including support staff, for a productive working atmosphere at the Village that promotes the mission of the Language Villages.
D. Speak the target language with participants and staff members as much as possible.

INSTRUCTIONAL LEAD:
-Develop and implement a linguistically and culturally appropriate learner-centered program, in consultation with the Program Director.
-Hire, orient and supervise Language Teacher and Cultural Assistant.
-Design and implement the educational curriculum, including assessment.
-Teach in person and online.
-Participate in staff orientation, student orientation & staff meetings.
-Assist the Program Director in the writing of a final report for the program.
-Other duties as assigned by Program Director.

LANGUAGE TEACHER:
-Under the direction of the Instructional Lead, plan, teach and assess language classes and activities, in person and online.
-Assist the Instructional Lead in the development of curriculum & assessments.
-Assist with other aspects of the program, including cultural presentations and activity periods.
-Participate in staff orientation, student orientation & staff meetings.
-Other duties as assigned by Program Director.

CULTURAL ASSISTANT:
-Participate in all aspects of the program, including activity periods and classes. Teach or assist as directed.
-Participate in staff orientation, student orientation & staff meetings.
-Other duties as assigned by Program Director.
Minimum Qualifications
INSTRUCTIONAL LEAD:
-Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.) or international equivalent
-Previous experience with Concordia Language Villages or other experiential learning
-Conversational and written proficiency in the target language
-Skills in teaching the target language & culture
-Work experience with middle-school & high-school students
-Strong personnel and program management skills
-Computer skills
-Ability to communicate effectively with parents and schools

LANGUAGE TEACHER:
-Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.) or international equivalent
-Intermediate or higher proficiency in the target language, both conversational and written
-Experience teaching the target language and culture
-Work experience with middle-school & high-school students

CULTURAL ASSISTANT:
-Completion of of at least one year in college/university/post-secondary school, at fully enrolled status
-Completion of intermediate level or higher of language study (typically, second or third-year coursework at the university level)
-Experience working with children and adolescents
-Skills in the target culture(s)(e.g., music, arts, sports related to the target culture(s))

Emotional resiliency and cognitive abilities to carry out job responsibilities, ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups respecting social and cultural diversity and to maintain appropriate boundaries.
