Job Summary:

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track teaching faculty position in Korean language, starting August 2024. This position will contribute to the growth and vibrancy of the Korean Language Program through engaging teaching and service activities. The successful candidate will teach Korean language courses across all levels and assist with new curriculum development. Service responsibilities may include training graduate teaching assistants, student placement in Korean language courses, and community outreach activities. Teaching faculty of all ranks are also expected to engage in regular professional development with support from the department.

Principal Duties:
1. Teaching:
-Teach a minimum of two Korean language courses per semester, across all levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced).
-Design and deliver proficiency-based courses aligned with the Korean Language Program, Professional Korean certificate program, and undergraduate Korean Major.
-Develop and maintain syllabi, teaching materials (including potential adaptations), and assessments.
-Hold regular office hours, advise students, and supervise graduate teaching assistants.
2. Proficiency Assessment:
-Collaborate in coordinating Korean language proficiency assessments for program/major/certificate students.
3. Instructional Technology Integration:
-Lead the vision and implementation of technology-enhanced curriculum and materials within the Korean Language Program.
-Actively engage and contribute to the development process.
4. Leadership & Support:
-Assume the role of Director for K-house in the International Learning Community.
-Guide and mentor student tutors to provide effective Korean language tutoring.

-Experience in teaching all levels of Korean at the postsecondary level in the United States preferred.
-Experience in teaching Heritage/Business/Conversation/Media Korean, technology-enhanced instructional design, assessment, curriculum development or Korean language program coordination desired.
-ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) Tester training in Korean desired.

This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

Location – North Campus Edmonton. This role is in person

The Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Alberta is seeking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in modern or contemporary Korean Studies in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Responsibilities 

  • Maintain an ambitious schedule of research publication in venues appropriate to the candidate’s discipline.

  • Teach four class sections of Korean studies per academic year, in person on our Edmonton campus. Classes will be a mix of introductory survey courses and advanced courses in the candidate’s field of specialization. The successful candidate will be expected to teach one course per year on some aspect of Korea-Canada relations broadly understood, in a fashion appropriate to their field of specialization.

  • Make yearly service contributions to the Department of East Asian Studies, to the University of Alberta, and to the scholarly profession at a rate appropriate to the rank of Assistant Professor.

Required Qualifications 

  • Ph.D. in a topic focused on some aspect of modern or contemporary Korea, in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts.

  • Evidence of an ambitious program of research, including publications or forthcoming publications in reputable scholarly venues.

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Korean and English

  • Experience in Canadian or Anglophone universities, either as a student, researcher, or instructor.

The Department

The Department of East Asian Studies was founded in 1982, and is one of the few departments of its kind in Canada that offers full four years in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages, along with courses in the histories, cultures, and societies of East Asia. Our diverse faculty includes scholars working in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts, and we are the only area studies department at any university in the province of Alberta. We have an award-winning Korean language program, as well as one Associate Professor specializing in premodern Korean literature.

Working at the University

Edmonton and the University of Alberta are situated on Treaty 6 territory, homeland of the Métis, and traditional meeting ground and home for many Indigenous Peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Dene, and Nakota Sioux. Established in 1908 as a board-governed, public institution, the University of Alberta has earned the reputation of being one of the best universities in Canada based on strengths in teaching, research, and service. Moreover, Black people as a demographic are growing faster in Alberta than in any other region, apart from central Canada. Nearly 10% of Edmonton’s population is of South Asian origin and 16% of East and Southeast Asian origin, with growing numbers of Edmontonians of Filipino, Latin American and Middle Eastern origins. The Edmonton public school system offers bilingual education for children in French, German, Hebrew, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), and American Sign Language. amiskwaciy Academy offers Cree as a high school credit and has started an Aboriginal study course in junior high school. At least two high schools, Amiskwaciy Academy and Victoria School of the Arts offer Cree and Blackfoot as a high school credit and has started an Indigenous Ways of Knowing program in junior high school.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required for consideration (Masters and Ph.D. preferred.
  • Teaching credentials are a plus but are not mandatory.
  • Experience with students with learning differences is a plus as well as mentoring experience.
  • The ideal candidate is outgoing, well organized, competent in basic computer skills, and is an individual who is eager to work in a highly dynamic, energetic school setting.
  • Candidates must be prepared to teach and tutor material at an elementary and middle school levels immediately. High school and adults’ classes are available depending on experience, education and credentials.

Department Summary

The School of Global Studies and Languages (GSL), also known as ASU 1, aspires to draw students to UO by engaging them with cultures, languages, histories, and ways of life across the world. The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers programs and courses related to the languages, literatures, and cultures of China, Japan, and Korea. Position Summary

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Oregon invites applicants for a full-time Career Instructor position to teach Korean.

The Career Instructor of Korean will teach Korean language courses at a variety of levels and contribute to the Korean program by collaborating with colleagues in course design and development. They will also take on other responsibilities associated with teaching such as supervising Graduate Employees (i.e., teaching assistants), meeting and communicating with students, and administering a placement test. The Career Instructor of Korean may also be asked to serve on department committees and will be expected to demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development.

Minimum Requirements

• Master’s degree in linguistics or a related field, including but not limited to Korean language, second language acquisition, or language pedagogy.
• Experience teaching Korean at the university/college level.
• Native or native-like fluency in Korean, and ability to communicate effectively with students in English as needed.

• Knowledge of language teaching methodologies.

The Role

We seek to appoint part-time hourly paid lecturers/tutors to contribute to the delivery of our programmes in English language and linguistics, Korean language, Japanese language, British Sign Language and Deaf studies.  The number of hours worked will be flexible and by negotiation.  The rate of pay includes remuneration for all work done in connection with teaching, preparation, setting and marking of student work, related course administration and includes an allowance for holiday pay.

Applications are invited from applicants who have expertise and experience in teaching any one of the following areas:

  • Japanese language
  • Korean language
  • British Sign Language
  • Deaf Studies

The number of hours taught will vary considerably and will depend on both the availability of the individual and the needs of the programmes.

Previous experience of teaching at university level would be an advantage.  The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills in English language, be able to demonstrate understanding of student support, be able to motivate students, and be willing work in a team.

Korean Language Lecturer- Part Time

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Korean Language training/ lectures to students of the Diploma in Airline Services programme.
  • Strong commitment and passionate in teaching young adults of different nationalities.
  • Cover the syllabus outlined for the assigned course(s) and assist students in the understanding of the topics covered as well as review and update all learning materials in compliance with the syllabus and curriculum.
  • Participate in the development of Learning Outcome, Set course work assignments and examination papers for students as well as marking of exams and other assessment
  • Supervise students, provide guidance and academic counselling (mentor mentee) to assist the progress of their academic achievement (understanding of examination and assignment requirements)
  • Join the college activities when required

Requirement:

  • Candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree, Professional Degree in Korean Language/ Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) or equivalent.
  • Computer literate, proficient in both Korean and English, excellent presentation skills  
  • At least 1 year(s) of working experience in the related field or equivalent industry-related experience.
  • Applicants must be willing to work in Desa Cemerlang, Johor
  • Part Time / Remote  position available
